Well, it's sour then earthy, then a little more sour, then kinda ashy, then has a dark chocolaty after taste. Very carbonated. Flavors get more complicated the more you drink. Final score: 75/100
I'll take 911 RS for $5000

I almost picked up some New Belgium earlier today. Unfortunately, my local Kroger doesn't have any of the Lips of Faith series, so I was restricted to their normal line. In hindsight, I probably should have gotten Shift or 1554, but I went with a local brown ale instead. The Trippel sounded pretty good, but I just finished a bomber of Belgian Ale, so I wanted something a bit different.

Sounds kind of.... terrible...
Is it a porter or something?
BTW I'm stoked it's oktoberfest season again. Why can't they make oktoberfest beers all year?

It's an ale, and 75/100 isn't terrible at all.

New Belgium is a resounding Meh for a vast majority of what they make.

I've heard good things about New Belgium. Unfortunately, the only one I've tried was Fat Tire...on tap. 50/100

Well mainly the description. Earthy, sour, and chocolatey sound like a very odd combo. Then again I am intrigued and will search for this at the local liquor store.

That sums up what they make. The good things you hear about them are from people who think Bud Select is the good shit.

Gonna sound like a total hipster here...but I liked them before they were popular. ;)
I'll usually buy Ranger or Rampant when on sale, but I agree most of their mainstream beers are average. I have enjoyed the lips of faith series though...at least it's something unique.

Good to know. I've only be of drinking age for a few months, and have developed a healthy respect for many of the local options, but haven't had too much experience with better distributed craft breweries.

An imperial porter, at 9% abv. Nice and dark, creamy head, and smells really sweet. Great texture, with a really smooth mouthfeel without too much carbonation. Sweet up front, but its lighter bodied than some of the thicker winter porters i've had. Finishes a bit bitter, but its more like how coffee or dark chocolate is bitter on the finish instead of just being bitter because it can. That sweetness up front sticks around through the middle, so you don't get any weird flavorless spots like the Left Hand Brewing Nitro Sawtooth that I had earlier.

I feel the same way, but I enjoy Ranger and Rampant, and I'm randomly trying their new pale, Tour de Fall for the first time tonight. It's not a knockout, but has an ok balance, though it's a bit watery and isn't hoppy enough for my tastes. In fairness, since I'm in CA I judge anything called a Pale Ale against Sierra Nevada, so in other company it may stand out a bit more.

Hit up your nearest liquor store or wine store, if they have some beer that you have never heard of, buy a random 6 pack of new to you beers. Repeat process.

Fair enough.
I would probably have the same reaction I had to this:
This beer kinda stands on its own. Now really something to eat anything with. A dessert beer if you will.

The local Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's both have a pretty good selection, so I usually try to go either of those, but I was out with my roommate and Kroger has a much better selection of food for him.
The really sad thing is that the ABC stores here don't sell beer, and wine stores are kinda rare, so I'm pretty much stuck with the grocery store selection.

To be honest, its the first rye I've had, so I don't necessarily know what the characteristics of a rye beer are since I don't have a lot of experience with them. Either way, its got a lot of flavors rolling around, which is really important to me, and its not very hoppy, which is more personal preference than anything else.

Since I feel the need to contribute:
Legend Brown Ale.
Malty, with a bit of caramel and coffee, with some fruity notes and just a bit of hop.
Brown ales are my thing.

Haha it definitely took me by surprise. The flavors are as extreme as you'd imagine. I would say it would be best enjoyed with a movie a bit after dinner.
Also the bottle is huge so good luck.

OMG how did I not know about this? I love Portland. Sounds gross because I don't like maple flavor, but I would put it on a shelf and display it.

If you don't like maple, then yes you won't like it. Apparently Rogue and Voodoo teamed up for this one too:
I think this one will turn out better.

I'mgoing to risk sounding all hipstery here, but I lived about 10 minutes from the New Belgium brewery years ago when it was still small and local, couldn't even get it outside of Colorado let alone just the bigger towns and cities. Fat tire was much better back then. So much better in fact that I'm pretty sure they changed the recipe. I think it even used to be a darker cloudier color. I protest this by no longer buying New Belgium unless it's either that or macro-crap.

Does it seem to you like they changed fat tire shortly after getting big? I swear it used to be much much better and cloudier than it is now.

This post is making me thirsty. And there is a bar here with well over 100 micros on tap. And part of the bar counter top is a trough of ice to keep your drink cold (like setting your beer down on a hockey rink).

Not hipstery at all. Totally believable.
Once on a roll the owners/creators get greedy. At first there's a need to keep the quality to get new buyers. Once they're on a roll and can count on volume, they cut corners and run for the hills.
Happens to almost everything. Sad.

That sounds very plausible. It is very sad. To this dayI think the old fat tire is one of the best beers I've ever had and nothing else tastes like it.

I feel the same way about one I've found. There's a very young, very small brewery around the corner that made their name with a 2013 gold medal winner. The brew is still available, and every time I drink it I cherish it as I know it will disappear, or be ruined.

Fair enough haha. I don't think this had enough of that for me to notice. I would consider this more dried fruity than bready. At least that was my impression of it. If you aren't a fan of rye, you may pick up those flavors more easily though. Still, worth a try if you can find it on tap somewhere.
